Police Motorcycle Replacement
Recommendation
Council authorize the City Finance Department to obtain bids for
replacement of three police motorcycles.
Background
Three of the five motorcycles in the traffic section are 1977
vintage, obtained from the initial grant for the implementation of
the traffic enforcement unit. With a projected service life of
five 'years, t-hese three motorcycles have far exceeded that
expectancy. Correspondingly, maintenance costs, have risen and the-
dependability needed is no longer present. Even more importantly,
due t'o the stresses on the machines caused by the miles and daily
use, the safety factors in metal fatigue become a prime
consideration. These three motorcycles should be replaced at this
time.
In this fiscal year, we budgeted for the replacement of six police
vehicles. It is only necessary at this time to replace four of
the patrol units. This results in a cost savings of approximately
$23,800 over that which was estimated. Estimated cost of
replacing the three police motorcycles is approximately $15,900 at
$5,300 each, including tax.
