TO: William Huston - City Manager
FROm: Hugh West - Maintenance Superintendent
SUBJECT: Citizen Request for Parkway Tree Removal
RECOMMENDATION:
That the City remove the tree as requested and replace with one
from the City approved list with no cost to the homeowner.
BACKGROUND:
Mr. & Mrs. Robert D. Weidner of 14321 Heatherfield request that
the City remove their parkway tree and replace with a more suitable
tree.
They complain of the root system being above ground in the parkway
making it very difficult to maintain and it makes their property
unsightly.
DISCUSSION:
The tree is a Little Leaf Fig tree w~cbis a member of the Rubber
tree family, its roots are very unsightly and grow above ground.
The amount of roots and the height they are above ground makes it
impossible to prune the roots and the tree still stand.
The neighbors were advised of the Weidner request for the removal
and we have received no objections.

ATTENTION: Mr. West
Dear M~. West:
We have a tree growing in our parkihg strip that has cracked the sidewalk
all the way across due to the surface roots, Two of the roots are also
growing parallel to the sidewalk and are halfway above ground for 2-3
feet on each side of the trunk.
We would like the tree removed and an Indian Laurel planted in its
place. The neighbor's directly across the street have an Indian Laurel
tree and the roots do not appear to have a tendency to grow on the surface.
A few years ago we relandscaped our front yard and we are hoping the roots
from the current tree will not crack the new walkway we installed. The
crack in existence now leads us to believe that it wontt be long before
the root(s) reach the new walkway.
Another consideration is the d-r.-ged sidewalk and the possibility of a
passerby getting tripped and injured, thereby opening the eventuality of
a lawsuit against us and the city. The crack isn't bad yet, but soon
could be.
Hopefully our narrative will be sufficient to get a different tree planted
in place of the shallow-rooted one.
Sincerely yours,
Mr, & Mrs, Robert D. Weidner
