In addition to this m~mo, a late reply was received from Stephen Atherton of.13661 Wheeler Pl'ace on 9-23-81 in whirl1 he opposed the removal of any trees on wP. ccler Place. BOB I'.ROI~'~IDE~R DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC ~IDRKS/ CITY ENGIN~ db Attadmments OATE: TO: September 22, 1981 William Houston - City Manager FROM: Hugh West - Maintenance superintendent SUBJECT: Homeowners Request for Street Tree Removal Mr. C. H. Davis of 13711 Wheeler Place has requested the City to remove one of the parkway trees on,his property frontage because it produces a little hard round ball almost the year round which litters the side walk and his lawn causi'ng u~due cost in labor and clean up and is also causing his property tO be unattractive. The parkway trees on Wheeler Place are approximately 20 years old, planted five years or more before TUsti'n had a tree department. I assume they were planted by a contractor or developer. All of the trees are Ficus Nitida like the ones planted along E1Camino Real, except for the one planted in front of Mr. Davis's property, which is a Ficus Retusa. It is of the same family of trees and is very hard to distinguish from the Nitfda in their juvenille stage, as it matures it becomes more distinguishable by its more round leaves and the mass production of the little round balls. This tree was either planted by mistake in identity by a nurser3~nan or was planted at a later date by a homeowner who wanted the trees closer together. The neighborhood was notified of Mr. Davis's request to remove the tree and no objections were received except from a Mrs. Comfort of 13701 Wheeler Place who stated she only objected to the removal if we did not replant a missing tree on her property. We will replace Mrs. Comforts tree. Please note the attached photographs that the tree in question is too close to a street light andi the planting distance to the tree on either side is somewhat close. The tree is being shaded out by the neighboring trees, also the ground was Covered by the dropping balls at the time the photograph was taken. Recommendation: I recommend that Mr. Davis's tree be removed as requested and the stump ground out and the tree not be replaced because of the street light on the right side and the water meter on the left.
