SIDEWALK MAINTenANCE/CLEANING (INFO~MATICIqAL REPORt)
At a recent meeting, City Council requested additional information on present City
polic~ for the maintenance/cleaning of City sidewalks adjacent to arterial
highways and to the rear of residences by a wall or fence.
Present policy is that the City does not clean or sweep these sidewalks unless
there is an unusual ~mount of debris that would cause a blockage of the public way
or a tripping hazard to pedestrians. This is normal policy in most Orange County
cities. In order for the City to aSsume a full time cleaning service on these
sidewalks, i.e. once a month, additional staff as well as equipment would be
required. A detailed study as to h~ many additional employees would be required
.has not been undertaken.
In lieu of d~anging present policy, I believe the sidewalks' should be cleaned on
an as m~c~ed basis and when determined by staff or when a spedific cc~plaint is
received from a resident for a specific area. The problems as outlined by
Councilman Edgar are mainly isolated and can be handled on an individual basis as
c~t~plaints are received.
