WILLIAM HUST~N, CIT~ MANAGER
BOB LEDE~DECKER, D~R OF PUBLIC ~31~<S/CITY E~GINEER
,SUBJECT: VEHICLE WEIGHT LIMIT RESTRICTICNS CN CEI~AIN STREETS
That staff be directed to prepare the er~hling resolution to establish the
prohibition of c~,..,ercial vehicles in excess of 6,000 pounds gross weight on
Pacific and '~" Streets between Main and Sixth Streets for adoption at the
September 21, 1981 City Council r~c~cting.
At the recent City Council workshop on August 31, 1981 regarding the proposed
partial closure of "C" Streets, many residents requested restricted weight limits
on Pacific Street and "B" Street between Main and Sixth Streets and along Sixth
Street adjacent to the residential properties.
A search of records indicates that "B" Street, bet~=cn First and Sixth Streets was
established as a street on which ~,u.~rcial vehicles are prohibited as outlined in
Resolution No. 545 dated February 20, 1961. At the present time, "B" Street is
posted with only one sign southerly of Main Street in the southbound direction.
This sign prohibits C~tu,~rcial vehicles over 2 tons gross weight.
Pacific Street, between Main and Sixth Streets, apparently has no prohibition of
C~,u,ercial vehicles of any gross weight at the present tin~.
It was also requested that Sixth Street be imposed with a weight limit
restriction. Any restriction of vehicle weights on this street would certainly
impact the industrial/business properties southerly of Sixth Street. It would
deprive these properties of access with C~,u,ercial vehicles in excess of the
designated weights. Sixth Street should remain unrestricted to all legal type
motor vehicles.
PROPOSAL:
It is suggested that both "B" and Pacific Streets, between Main add Sixth Streets,
be designated as streets from which C~.u;~rcial vehicles of gross weight in excess
of 6,000 pounds are prohibited. The previous restriction of 2 tons on 4,000
pounds is outdated and should be revised to conform with other vehicle weight
prohibitions currently in force at other locations within the City. It would be
appropriate to limit commercial vehicles in excess of 6,000 pounds gross weight on
these two streets irregardless of whether "C" Street is partially vacated or
remains as it presently exists.
