FROM: Ron Lowenber§, Acting Chief of Police
SUBJECT:Disposal of Old Fire Equipment
BACKGROUND
When the Fire Department was disbanded, the Police Department became the
recipient of some of their old gear and equipment.
We recently cleaned and re-organized the Police Department storage area in
the basement and came across the following items:
Approximately 20 pairs of fireman's turnouts
Approximately l0 plastic helmets with liners
Approximately 5 sets of double barrell LAPD emergency lights
PROBLEM
We contacted Chuck Pister, Fire Captain for the Orange County Fire Department.
He inspected the equipment and said that it couldn't be used because it wasn't
O.S.H.A. approved. Apparently, there have been several new regulations reference
the type of fabric which can be used in making turnouts and the type of plastics
used in making the helmets. Our stocks do not meet the new standards.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
Since we cannot donate the items to other fire departments because of the O.S.H.A.
standards, we might consider sending the gear to a disadvantaged area in Mexico
that needs some fire equipment.
