SUBJECT: LANDSCAPING OF PROPOSED IRVINE BLVD. CENTER MEDIANS
BETie M PROSPECT AND NEWPORT
The City Council, at their meeting of May 4, 1981, approved the Center Median Master
Plan at subject location. These medians are proposed to be constructed in
conjunction with an FAU project, which also includes modification of traffic signals
on Irvine Blvd. between Yorba and Red Hill.
The original FAU submittal proposed all stamped concrete for these medians in an
attempt to reduce maintenance costs. Staff now needs some direction from the Council
as to what they desire in the way of landscaping so that final construction plans can
be completed. We are attempting to meet an August deadline for submittal of this
project since we have been told that the earlier we get it in, the better chance we
stand of receiving funding.
Staff offers the following suggestions for landscaping subject medians:
SUGGESTION A
Pave medians entirely with stamped concrete and provide cut-outs only for trees at
approximately 100' on center. This plan would keep maintenance costs and irrigation
system costs to a minimum.
SUGGESTION B
Pave all narrow necks at turn pockets and 50% of full width areas with stamped
concrete and provide cut-outs for shrubs and trees. Remaining unpaved areas to have
some type of ground cover. In conjunction with this suggestion, it is proposed that
a future project would provide for paving the narrow necks of the existing medians on
Irvine Blvd. between the Newport Freeway and Prospect so that there would be sane
continuity to the plan.

Dear Mr. Mayor;
On behalf of Tustin Meadows I would like to thank the City Council
and the City of Tustin Maintenance Department for planting the new
grass strips on Sycamore Ave. in the Meadows. We would particularly
like to thank Don Saltarelli and Hugh West who proposed and spear-
headed the project. The maintenance staff is to be complimented
on their speed and efficiency which resulted in very little disruption
to traffic during the whole project.
Thanks again for a vast impr6vement in our area.
Yours truly,
