TREE RSMOVALS - MAIN STREET, "B" STREI~P AND "C" STRE~
The Gfeller Developmmnt Company, developers of Tract No. 10979 (Steven's Square), has
requested the removal of certain trees and the relocation of two trees within the
public right-of-way adjacent to their development. This request is based upon a
final study and landscape plan by their consultant landscape architect.
Each of the requested removals and/or relocations is described as follows:
e
'11~o trees on "C" Street as shown in "Green" on the attached sketch are
requested to be relocated as shown. This relocation is requested because of
conflicts with the proposed driveway. These trees are "Ficus Retusa
Nitida", or Indian Laurel Fig.
One tree on "C" Street as shown in "O~nge" is requested to be remDved.
This tree is a "Jungians Regia", or English Walnut. The reason for removal
is that it does not fit in with the rem%inJng street trees, which are Ficus
Retusa Nitida.
Two trees on Main St. as shown in "Red" are requested to be removed. These
trees are "Schinus Molle", or California Peppers. The reason for these
r~vals is that they have become a potential public hazard due to their age
and condition, These trees are hollow on the inside and are suffering from
dry rot. They are an extr~nely, high maintenance tree because they require
frequent pruning to keep the foilage to a minimum to reduce the weight and
strain on the tree itself.
Staff was planning to send a request for their rePaDval in the near future
· 'due to the hazardous condition.
· Three trees on the southeasterly corner of Main and "B" Streets are
requested to be removed. Two of these trees are Avacado trees and one is
"Bauhinia Variegata", or Purple Orchid tree. The developer has requested
that these trees be removed to provide a larger radius at the curb return
only if the remaining area does not look too defoiliated by the rerroval of
other trees on the site. They would desire the option to remove these trees
at some time in the future as the project progresses·
Staff had recommended that these trees be removed at the time the initial
site plan for the proposed development was revi~ed.

TREE REMOVALS - MAIN STREET, "B" STREET AND "C" STREET
PAGE 2
Three trees on "B" Street as shc~vn in "Brcwn" are r~.~uested to be_ removed.
These trees consist of one "Prunus Persica" or Peach tree, one Hibiscus tree
shrub and one "Erythrina Crista-galli", or Cod<spur Coral tree. These trees
are foreign to the existing street trees along "B" Street and do not blend
into the treescape of "B" Street.
This tree is on Main Street and is sh~n in "Yellow" on the attached
drawing. The developer is not requesting its remDval at this time.
However, staff is requesting this tree be £emoved due to its hazardous
condition. This is a "Eucalyptus Globulus", or Blue Gum, which has a
hollowed interior and evidence of dry rot at its base. It is a candidate to
be blown over due to heavy wind conditions. This tL~ee presently encroadnes
into the roadway of Main Street.
If this tree was to be removed at the same time as the California Peppers,
replacement trees could be planted and would grow at a unifomn rate rather
than staging their replacement.
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
That the Tustin City Council, at their meeting of April 20, ~981, authorize the
following street tree removals and/or relocations:
1. Relocation of two (2) "Ficus Retusa Nitida", or Indian Laurel Fig trees on
"C" Street.
2. Removal of one (1) "Jugians Regia", or English Walnut tree on "C" Street and
replacement with a Ficus Retusa Nitida tree.
3. Removal of two (2) "Schinus Molle", or California Pepper trees on Main
Street and replacement with approved street trees.
4. Removal of lwo (2) Avacado and.one "Bauhinia Variegata", or Purple Orchid
tree at the southeasterly corner of "B" and Main Streets as required by the
developer.
5. R~noval of one (1) "Prunus Persica", or peach tree, one (1) Hibiscus tree
shrub and one (~) Erythrinia Crista-galli, or Cookspur Coral tree on "B"
· · Street.
6. Rer~Dval of one (~) "Eucalyptus Globu!us". or Blue Gum tree on Main Street
'and replacement with an approved street tree.
