PATROL VEH'S 02-02-81DATE: TO: FROH: SUBJECT: January 26, CONSENT CALENDAR 1981 Inter-Corn Honorable M~yor and City ~cil~,l~/~Iembers Ron Nault, Finance Directo~/ Replacement Police Patrol Vehicles BACKGROUND In the 1980-81 adopted budget, Council approved the purchase of the replacement police patrol vehicles in the amount of $36,500 and the addition of one patrol vehicle in the amount of $7,526. The replacement vehicles are to be funded by the Equipment Re- placement Fund and the new unit is to be funded by the General Fund. During the meeting of January 12, the Council agreed with the concept of "piggy backing" onto the Los Angeles County purchase of patrol vehicles with the understanding that a purchase order must be issued by January 15, prior to the time that Council could take formal action on the purchase. The amount requested was $43,392. In addition, Council agreed to allow the Police Department to substitute a station wagon for the one additional police patrol vehicle originally requested in the budget. A limit of $9,500 was authorized so that a search for the vehicle could be initiated and a purchase order issued to avoid the problems of "subject to prior sale." ~ DISCUSSION The Los Angeles County's purchase of police vehicles will be approximately 1,000 units. By including the City of Tustin in this fleet purchase ~e are assured of the best possible price per vehicle. A purchase order has been issued in the amount of $43,393, which exceeds the budgeted amount by $6,892. Council will need to appropriate this amount from the Equipment Reserve Fund reserves. A station wagon has been located that will suit the Police Depart- ment's needs and a purchase order has been issued in the amount of $9,196, which exceeds the budgeted amount by $1,670. Police Department has identified two capital accounts from which this difference can be taken, 9520 - Audio Visual and Communications, $670; and 9570 - Rescue and Safety Equipment, $1,000.
