IVED BOB LEDENDECKER, DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC WOP~S/CITY ENGINEER RELOCATION OF CAMPHOR TREE - SEVENTEENTH STREET Pursuant to your request, staff has solicited bids for the relocation of the 85 year old Camphor Tree located on private property on the southerly side of Seventeenth St. between Prospect Avenue and Enderle Center Drive. Bids were requested from two firms, "George the Treeman" and "Messersmith Custom Tree Movers". Both firms declined to submit a proposal due to the unlikely survival of the tree. Following are some of the items outlined by these firms which would affect the tree's survival: a. Size and age of tree. b. Extensive pruning of foilage above ground as well as the root system below ground. c. Potential change of soil conditions from what the tree has existed in for 85 years. In an additional conversa~tion with the architect who is designing the proposed building to the west, it was indicated that his firm might have an interest in the Camphor Tree as a part of their proposed landscaping scheme. This firm made an inquiry as to cost and feasibility of relocating the tree approximately 200 feet westerly onto their development site. The tree firm responding, Valley Crest Landscaping, provided much the same information as the other two firms as follows: 1. About a 20% chance of survival. 2. Estimated cost of $20,000.00 for a move of approximately 200 feet. RECOMMENDATION: It is staff's recommendation that the City not get involved with any movement of this Camphor Tree due to the estimated low chance of survival, the cost and what appears to be a totally private matter. This tree is located entirely on private property and not within any public rights-of-way. DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC WORKS/ CITY ENGINEER BL:db cc: Bob Hill
