SUBJECT: HOLT AVENUE TREE REMOVALS
Staff has received an offer from the Southern California Edison
Co. to remove eight (8) palm trees along the easterly curb of
Holt Avenue between Newport Avenue and Irvine Blvd. This request
was initiated as a result of a fire in the top of one of the palm
trees caused by the palm fromes coming in contact with the
overhead electrical wires.
Normally trees are trimmed away from the overhead wires to
eliminate this problem, but due to the growth patterns of a palm
tree, excessive trimming will remove all of the foliage on a
permanent basis. Not all of the trees are of a height that will
conflict with the overhead wires, but eventually in a few short
years we will be experiencing the same problem with the remaining
palm trees along Holt Avenue.
These palm trees are not on the City's approved list of street
trees and apparently were planted many years ago prior to the
list being established.
The removal of all eight trees would allow the replanting of
approved street trees which would match those located on the
westerly side of Holt Avenue adjacent to the Mervyn's Center.
RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that'the Tustin City Council authorize the
removal of eight (8) palm trees along the easterly side of Holt
Avenue between Newport Avenue and Irvine Blvd. and the replanting
of eight (8) approved street trees as replacements.
