HomeMy WebLinkAboutRPT 1 CULT ARTS COMM 11-17-80DATE: TO: FROH: SUBJECT: REPORTS NO. 1 11-17-80 November 6, 1980 Inter-eom Honorable Mayor and City Council Royleen A. White, Director of Community Services~' ATTACHED REQUEST FROM CULTURAL ARTS COMMITTEE The attached letter makes a request about which I'm fairly certain the Council would request my comments. Although dated October 20, the authorization of all listed Committee members was not obtained until the first week of November when the letter was officially received in this office. As much as I would like to agendize this for the November 17 meeting, I find I cannot do so -- due to the press of other work deadlines and the fact that I will be attending a training seminar the week of November lO. Therefore I recommend that consideration of this item be continued until December 1. At that time I will have completed a staff report which will be included in your December 1 Council packet. Representatives from the Cultural Arts Committee will also be invited to attend the December 1 Council meeting. In addition to considerations which I would normally include (such as need, perceived costs and benefits, available office space, background on the Committee, impact on the organization, and potential for success), I would appreciate Council comments November 17 regarding anything else you would like included in the December 1 staff report. RAW:ss attachment October 20, 1980 Members of the Tustin City Council Royleen White D~n Blankenship In January 1977,several members of the Tustin community who were involved in various aspects of the arts were invited by the city to participate on a Tustin Cultural Arts Advisory Committee. The volunteer efforts by this committee resulted in the initiation and expansion of the following programs: Cultural Arts Show (four years) Crafts Show (two years) Judging of School District Art Show (four years) Youth Arts Carousel (Summer Arts Day Camp: two years) High Bchool Dance I~rogram (one year) These prog~-ams now have great growth potential if support continues. The problem facing us tod~y is that, in spite of our enthusiasm and talents, the job of organizing, motivating and coordinating these activities successfully requires the leadership of a person who can devote his or her time specifically to these programs. Of our membership, no one can take on such responsibilities on a volunteer basis, although many are willing to assist. We propose, therefore, that the Council open a position for a part-time Cultural Arts Coordinator in the Community Services office, and that the position be funded for one year. The goal of the Cultural Arts Coordinator would then be to make the position self-supporting by the end of the first year through the r~ising of funds or acquisition of 6zants. We have amongst our membership at this time ~ person who is willing to take on such a position. The volunteers on this committee have served enthusiastically ~for almost four yearS~ The aPpointment ofa Cultt~al Arts Coordinator would ensure the continued support by the committee for those projects already established and for additional and expanded programs, as the City of Tustin itself expands.
