REPORTS
No. 1
Inter-Corn
Honorable Mayor and City Council Members
Con~nunify Development Department
Proposed Ordinance Adopting New Building Code and Related Regulations
The proposed draft ordinance submitted by the city attorney's office has been
reviewed and a number of areas needing correction, minor modification or clari-
fication have been identified. We will schedule the final ordinance proposal
for public hearing on October 20, 1980. The majority of the new ordinance regu-
lations are standardized recommendations from national and international
organizations modified for local conditions. Similar ordinances have been or
are in the process of being adopted by a majority of governmental jurisdictions.
Our initial experience with the new codes shows an increased ability fo be
flexible and solve problems which could not be addressed under the old codes.
Both the LaVecke Corporation development at the corner of Santa Fe and Red Hill,
and the proposed Stevens Square-Gfeller Corporation office complex on Main Street
are examples of projects which Can be more readily accomplished under the pro-
posed ordinances. Rapidly changing construction technology and new development
modes (industrial/commercial condominiums, office subdivisions over commonly owned
subterranean parking and other new legal development Forms) necessitates an up-
grading of the codes.
In addition, staff will prepare a study and discussion document on alternative
fire code provisions and the newly proposed conditions for adoption in the County
fire code ordinances..
