FROH:
SUBJECT:
BOB LEDENDECKER, DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC WORKS/CITY ENGINEER
AWARD OF BID - TRAFFIC SIGNAL MAINTENANCE
Bids were received on May 23, 1980 at 1]:00 A.M. for a Traffic Signal Maintenance Con-
tract as follows:
Signal Maintenance, Inc., ................
Anaheim
Superior Signal Service
Bell Gardens
$l,872.72 per month for
35 intersections and 3
flashing beacons
$1,961.00 per month for
35 intersections and 3
flashing beacons
There are only two firms in this area that perform this type of work.
Presently, the City is under agreement with Signal Maintenance, Inc. for this main-
tenance service on a year to year basis for $1,023.05 for 35 intersections per month.
The original contract with Traffic Signal Maintenance Co. expired in 1974 and has
been extended on a year to year'basis as previously indicated. Signal Maintenance
Inc. has since acquired the Traffic Signal Maintenance Co. and taken over their duties.
The original contract did not include many of the maintenance items within the new con-
tract, such as painting once a year, timing checks of individual signal phases and in-
terval timing circuits, vehicle detectors, pedestrian and bicycle push buttons, and
relamping of all incandescent lamps once a year. These items have historically been
paid for as an extra work item above the routine monthly charge. It is Staff's con-
tention that the overall traffic signal maintenance cost will remain approximately
the same the first year, except for the routine inflationary costs. In total, the
City has 45 signalized traffic signals. The remaining ten intersections are main-
tained by other governmental jurisdictions such as the State, County and City of
Irvine.
RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the Tustin City Council at their meeting of June 16, 1980,
award the Traffic Signal Maintenance Contract-to the firm Traffic Signal Maintenance
Co. of Anaheim.
