BOX 5373 ORANGE, CA 92667 SOUND SYSTEM ENGINEERING- SALES-SERVICE (714) 997- 5645 June 16, 1980 City of Tustin 300 Centennial Way Tustin, Calif., 92680 Attn: City Council Dear Sirs: We have just completed servicing the sound system for your Council Chamber on friday June 13, 1980. The nature of services performed, our findings, and recommendations for updating the existing sound system are here in contained. The system as originally designed and installed was of the highest industry standards at the time of pt~rchase. In the past five years many technological ~dvancements in electronics have been m~de available which enhance ease of operating and reliability. All as recommended here shall be of the latest proven reliable design and shall be installed according to industry standard to interface with existing equipment. The failure of the sound system was directly related to the equalizer Altec model 9860. The function of this piece of electronic equipment is to tune the system to fit the acoustic environment of the room. When properly tuned it will increase gain by decreasing the squeal of feedback and creating a more realistic sound rather than the typical artificial sound of an audio reinforcement system. The Altec 9860 was one of the first of its kind and is no longer manufactured due to such failures. As you listen to the sound system now you hear a hissing sound. Most of this is from the equalizer and ~here is no guarantee how long it will be before another failure. I recommend replacing it with a current model of reliable design. The switching matrix used to activate microphones and adjust levels was checked, adjusted, and transient noise associated with the switches eliminated as much as possible. There is now available a total automatic microphone mixing system which would eliminate the switches and level control currently employed. When any microphone is spoken into the system is automatically activated, the microphone turned on, and level is adjusted to a point of maximum gain before feedback. As additional microphones are spoken into simultaniously the prodcedure is automatically repeated always adjusting level to maximum without feedback. Once properly installed no adjustment or operator is required. This would eliminate all existing microphone~ switches, level controls, and associated equipment from the council chambers. The pops, squeals, and possiblity of failure of the aging relay matrix would be eliminated. I recommend automatic microphone mixing for any council chambers as the only way to properly control a large number of microphones. The followiD~ electronic equipment is recommend to meet the require- ments as herein called for: 1 ea. INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH PRODUCTS 4013 12 CHANNEL AUTOMATIC MICROPHONE MIXER 1 ea.
