HomeMy WebLinkAboutOB 1 BIKE PATH AT&SF 03-17-80DATE: MARCH lO, 1980 OLD BUSINESS No. 1 3-]7-80 TO: FROM: DAN BLANKENSHIP, CITY ADMINISTRATOR BOB LEDENDECKER, DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC WORKS/CITY ENGINEER SUBJECT: BIKE AND PEDESTRIAN PATH WITHIN THE ATCHISON, TOPEKA AND SANTA FE RAILROAD RIGHT OF WAY (A,T. & S.F.) Pursuant to the City Council's direction at their February 19th meeting, Staff mailed questionaires to 115 residents which border the proposed project. These questionaires were mailed on February 26, 1980. As of this date, we have received sixty-nine (69) responses with eighteen (18) being in favor and fifty-one (51) being opposed to this project. Following is a recap of the comments in favor of the project: 1. The route is already used by children, perhaps if it were considered a recreational area it would be respected. 2. Great idea. 3. Motorcycles are already a problem., suggest that the area be closed at night like Centennial Park. Residences already experience problems from: a. noisy mot. orcycies b. noise c. rock throwin~ 2. Lack of privacy to residents. 3. Mobile home park experiences people jumping over the fence and harassing the residents of the park. q. Incompatibility of the two joint uses. (Railroad and Biketrail) 5. Vandalism to adjacent properties will certainly increase. RECOMMENDATION: Due to the responses of the affected residents immediately adjacent to the proposed project being about 3 to 1 against the project, it is recommended that this project not be pursued and that no further work or funds be com- mitted to the project, except for notifying the resident that initiated the project study that it has been cancelled.
