HUSTON, CITY MANAGER PATRICK SANCHEZ, PARKS AND REREATION DIRECTOR MISS TUSTIN SCHOLARSHIP PAGEANT SUMMARY The Miss Tustin Scholarship Pageant is requesting a $2,500 donation from the Cry Council to support the 2004 pageant RECOMMENDATION Pleasure of the City Council. FISCAL IMPACT There is no appropriation for the Miss Tustin Scholarship Pageant in the current budget. Any contribution would require City Council approval. BACKGROUND Preparations are now underway for the 2004 Miss Tustin Scholarship Pageant. Based upon the success of the event over the past three years, the committee is requesting financial assistance from the City again this year. Last year, the Council supported the Miss Tustin Pageant with a $2,500 contribution. Contestants must live in the Tustin Unified School District and be between the ages of 17 and 24. The winner of the miss Tustin Pageant attends the Miss California Pageant and she may compete in the Miss America Scholarship Pageant. Miss tustin represents the City at numerous special events. Miss Tustin is presented with $2,500 in scholarship money. She receives an additional $1,000 for being in the Miss California Scholarship Pageant. All contestants receive a scholarship award that can only be used for educational purposes. Page 2 A funding request for the 2004 Miss Tustin Pageant is attached. We have been able to award some scholarships to our outstanding young ladies of Tustin. The contestams must live in the Tustin Unified School District, be between the ages of 17 & 24. 1Vfiss Tustin then goes on to the Miss California Pageant where she competes to go on to the Miss America Scholarship Pageant. We give Miss Tustin $2500.00 in Scholarship Money and she receives $1000.00 just for being in the Miss California Scholarship pageant. All comestants receive some scholarship money. The money can only be used to further tbek education. Miss Tustin is truly a representative of Tustin. She knows when she is crowned it is a job for a year. Miss Tustin is our representative to the Garden Grove Strawberry Festival; she visits the Mayor of Fresno (brings a gif~ from the City of Tustin). She goes to all of the Southern California Pageants as Tustins representative. She is expected to he at most of the ribbon cuttings and mixers for the Charaber of Commerce. She will be at the Street Fair and Chili Cook-off; all three days at Tustin Tiller Days, Tustin Meadows Parade, Forth of July Celebration, most of the Golf Tournaments in the City, Police Open House, the Santa Cop Program and any where else she is requested. We no longer receive any funds form The Tustin Community Foundation. Because of the funds fi.om the City of Tusfin, The contestant sponsors. IW~ss Tustin Fund Ralmrs and ticket sales to the event we are one of the top ten Scholarship Pageants in the Miss California Organization. We are again asking The City of Tustin to help us with $2500.00 since she is truly a representative of the City of Tustin. I will be asking other groups for money and doing fundrsisers this year and hopefully we will have enough for Miss Tustin Pageant 2004. I would love to bring Miss Tustin and her court to a Council Meeting so you can meet these talented and intelligent young Ladies. They are our future.
