HomeMy WebLinkAboutCC RES 93-129 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 RESOLUTION NO. 93-129 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF TUSTIN, CALIFORNIA, RECOGNIZING DECEMBER 1, 1993, AS WORLD AIDS DAY. The City Council of the City of Tustin does hereby resolve as fc[lows: WHEREAS, the global spread of the HIV infection and AIDS necessitates a worldwide effort to increase communication, education and preventative action to stop the transmission of HIV and the spread of AIDS; and, WHEREAS, the World Health Organization has designated December 1 of each year. as World AIDS Day, a day to expand and strengthen the worldwide effort to stop AIDS; and, WHEREAS, the World Health Organization now estimates that 14 million people are currently infected with HIV and that over 2.5 million of them have gone on to develop AIDS; and, WHEREAS, the American Association for World Health is encouraging a better understanding of the challenge of HIV/AIDS nationally as it recognizes that the number of people diagncsed with HIV/AIDS in the United States continues to increase with an estimated 1 to 1.5 million Americans currently HIV infected and over 315,000 AIDS cases reporte~ (as of June 1993); and, WHEREAS, the number of cases of AIDS reported in California is over 55,700 with over 2,700 cases in Orange County and ~L~h over 58 cases reported in the City of Tustin; and, WHEREAS, there is no vaccine or cure for HIV infection or AIDS; and, WHEREAS, World AIDS Day provides an opportunity to focus on HIV infection and AIDS, caring for people with HIV infection and AIDS, and learning about AIDS; and, WHEREAS, World AIDS Day 1993 theme, "AIDS: A Time to Act" will focus on taking action and expressing the urgent need for all communities and individuals to realize that it is time to face the challenge of HIV/AIDS; an~, 1 3 4 5 6 I 8 10 11 12 13 ld 1.5 1G 17 18 ~0 9.1 ~.2 9.5 27 9_8 Resolution No. Page 2 93-129 WHEREAS, the Orange County HIV Planning Advisory Council, and the Education and Prevention Committee, consisting of HIV/AIDS education and prevention providers, supports World AIDS Day in Orange County and encourages public education and awareness that promotes preventive health behavior which will halt the further spread of HIV; NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of Tustin does hereby declare December 1, 1993 as World AIDS Day and urges all citizens to take part in activities and observances designed to increase awareness and understanding of AIDS Day and urges all citizens to take part in activities and observances designed to increase awareness and understanding of AIDS as a global challenge, to take part in AIDS prevention activities and programs, and to join the global effort to prevent transmission of HIV and the further spread of AIDS.
