BACKGROUND: Attached is a letter of request for tree removal from Philip Long of 13642 Loretta Drive. The sidewalks as mentioned in Mr. Long's letter have been recently repaired as a result of displacement of same by the roots of the subject tree. DISCUSSION: It is my understanding that Mr. Long is in the process of relandscaping and upgrading his front yard area at 13642 Loretta Drive. The root system of the existing street tree, a Jacaranda, are on and above the ground surface. These roots preclude the proper planting and maintenance of a lawn within the parkway. The majority of the trees within the vicinity of Mr. Long's residence are of the variety of Ficus Nitida. 1 4:? ,ee-,,2L ,, BOB R DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC WORKS/ CITY ENGINEER Attachment 10 Phillip Long 13642 Loretta Drive Tustin, CA 92680 April 25, 1983 Mr. Bob Ledendecker Director of Public Works City of Tustin 300 Centennial Way Tustin, CA 92680 RE: Tree Removal and Replacement Dear Mr. Ledendecker: R E C E IVEI) A,F i, 2 S 1`J% 3 u TUSTIN PUBLIC,> ORKS DEPT. BY Recently it was necessary for the City to do extensive repair to side- walks damaged by tree roots in front of our and other Residences located on LORETTA DRIVE. The root system of the trees had caused the sidewalk surfaces to crack and then be raised to an unsafe and potentially dangerous "tripping" level when used by pedestrians. The repairs have now been made; however the cause remains,,namely a tree and unless removed the same problem and expense of repair will again reoccur. We respectfully request that the existing tree be removed and replaced by a FICUS NITIDA, which we are advised is a species approved by the City and would conform to our neighbours tree. Your prompt attention is appreciated. Sincerely, Phillip Long
