DATA 911 MOBILE DATA COMPUTER DONATION TO SIGNAL HILL PD
The Police Department recently replaced outdated Data 911 Mobile Data Computers
from all of our police vehicles. The devices have no monetary value as they are at the
end of their lifecycle, and are no longer supported by the manufacturer. The City of
Signal Hill Police Department has requested use of our old Data 911 computers to use
as parts for their current system.
RECOMMENDATION:
Authorize the transfer of surplus Data 911 equipment to the City of Signal Hill Police
Department.
FISCAL IMPACT:
There would be no cost to the City to transfer the used Data 911 equipment.
CORRELATION TO THE STRATEGIC PLAN:
None.
BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION:
After the completion of the conversion to new mobile data computers, staff was
contacted by a representative of the Signal Hill Police Department regarding the
disposition of this equipment. They inquired about securing our old computers to assist
their agency with keeping the same Data 911 system running in their police vehicles.
They are unable to upgrade their system at this time, and are seeking access to
replacement parts to assist with the longevity of their current mobile data computers.

There is currently no market value of the used Data 911 equipment as it over 8 -years
old, and is considered antiquated technology. The company no longer manufactures
replacement parts which is why Signal Hill Police has asked for assistance.
In order to facilitate the request, all hard drives from the old Data 911 system would be
electronically cleaned of data by our City Information Technology staff. The expense to
clean the hard drives would take place even if the devices were sent for a -waste
disposal. A total of 35 computers would be involved in this transaction, and there would
be no additional cost to move the equipment as Signal Hill Police would facilitate the
transfer.
