I said this request is not about identity politics but public safety and the rule of law. I urged you to adopt an ordinance to exempt the City of Tustin from SB54 (which is now public law), so our police force can work directly with ICE and publicize to would-be criminals that Tustin is not a sanctuary for them. I urged you to join in the DOJ lawsuit with our neighboring cities and the County of Orange. I urged you to adopt a resolution in opposition to this law. I urged you to do any or all of the above. Mr. Mayor, I placed a call to your office and have not heard back. To date, there is nothing but silence from the Tustin City Council ... it's deafening. I shared with you that my purse was stolen while unloading groceries at home. My neighbor told me her husband's car had been vandalized. A gentleman at the last council meeting shared how an undocumented person hit his car and caused him severe health and financial burdens. Betty has gotten up almost every meeting and recounted statewide tragedies. One of you communicated with me that the council sent a letter to Sacramento opposing SB54 when it was in the State Legislature. Well that was then. Now it is signed into state law. It's a different ball game. Tustin is now a de facto sanctuary city unless you do something. If other cities take actions opposing S1354, and we do not, then the crime will come here to Tustin. None of us want that—in fact that's what we are afraid of. I want you to know that it pains me to have to say these things. I'm a former WH appointee at DOE, congressional staffer, and government relations professional. I just can't get my head around why you would duck this historic issue? Is this what you want your legacy to be? This is Tustin! I continue to urge you to take a stand and uphold your oath of office where you swore to defend the US Constitution and the people of Tustin. Please put this item on the Agenda for next meeting, and vote on it so we can have the members of the City Council on record. Please put safety first. My old boss used to say, "freedom isn't free...it's paid for with responsibility". One last indulgence? You are looking at a barnacle of history. My great grandfather 13 times removed was William Bradford, governor of the Mayflower Colony. My family has fought in every war since we stepped onto these shores 400 years ago (come 2020). We fought to create and preserve the union and were abolitionists all. While I cannot fight like the men in my family, I can help to fight for the liberty they gave us. Please do your part too. Thank you for your time.
