HomeMy WebLinkAboutCC RES 98-41] RESOLUTION NO. 98-41 2 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF 3 TUSTIN, CALIFORNIA, SUPPORTING INCREASED FUNDING FOR THE FISCAL YEAR 1998-99 OF THE ARMY CORPS OF J' ENGINEERS CIVIL WORKS CONSTRUCTION PROGRAM 5 6 WHEREAS., the Santa Ana River in Orange COunty, California, is recognized by the Federal Government as the worst flood threat west of the Mississippi 7 River; and 8 WHEREAS, the Santa Ana River Mainstem Project has been planned and 9 under construction for the past 10 years by the Army Corps of Engineers; and :I0 WHEREAS, if adequate funding as requested by the Army Corps of 11 Engineers is not provided, the existing construction wilt take many years to complete, placing the program's widespread benefits in consjderable jeopardy; ]9~ and WHEREAS, without the completion of the Santa Ana River Mainstem 14 Project, millions of residents within the flood plain of the Santa Ana River will remain subject to the perils of disastrous flood, that could cause the loss of 15 3,000 Fives and property damage amounting to $15 billion; and 16 WHEREAS, floods from the Santa Ana River would destroy interstate 17 transportation facilities, railroads and highways, and have long term affects on business activities on a national level; and 19 WHEREAS, the lack of adequate funding for the construction of the Santa Ana River Project will increase the probable commitment of FEMA funding and '2,0 long term insurance requirements; 21 THEREFORE, be it resolved that Congress is urged to provide funding in 22 fiscal year 1999 to allow the Army Corps Construction Projects to proceed as planned and complete the construction of on-going projects in a timely manner. 23 PASSED AND ADOPTED by the City Council of the City of Tustin at a 24 regular meeting held on the 4th day of May, 1998. 25 27 THOMAS R. $r~'LTARELLI, MAYOR 28 PAMELA STOI~R, CITY bLERK City of Tustin RESOLUTION CERTIFICATION STATE OF CALIFORNIA ) COUNTY OF ORANGE ) ss CITY OF TUSTIN ) RESOLUTION NO. 98-41 Pamela Stoker, City Clerk and ex-officio Clerk of the City Council of the City of Tustin, California,' does hereby certify that the whole number of the members of the City Council is five; that the above and foregoing resolution was passed and adopted at a regular meeting of the City Council held on the 4th day of May, 1998, bythe following vote: COUNCILMEMBER AYES: Saltarelli, Worley, Doyle, Potts, Thomas COUNCILMEMBER NOES: None COUNCILMEMBER ABSTAINED None COUNCILMEMBER ABSENT: None P~mela Stoker, City'~e~rk
