SUBJECT:
GRAD NIGHT FUNDING REQUEST
SUMMARY:
Tustin and Foothill High Schools are each requesting a $2,500 donation from the City to support
Grad Night activities.
RECOMMENDATION
Pleasure of the Council.
FISCAL IMPACT
The total donation of $5,000 is not currently identified as funded in the 2000-01FY Budget. Funds
could be drawn from the General Fund Community Outreach Account toward this effort.
BACKGROUND
Annually, each high school has approached the City Council for funding of this post graduation
activity. Requests from each high school have taken place since 1989. Grad Night activities at
Tustin and Foothill High Schools will be held on June 15, 2001, from 9'30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.
The Grad Night activity is a registered non-profit organization that depends on donations and
fundraisers to help defray costs for student activities. This event focuses on providing .a safe,
alcohol-free environment for graduating seniors. The Grad Night Committee at both high schools is
made up of parent volunteers. The Committee needs help to provide a sober night of celebration for
over 800 graduating seniors in our community. Alternative grad night programs like these have
significantly reduced accidents and deaths of high school seniors in Orange County and nationwide
in the past.
Penny Brown, from Foothill High School and Tim O'Donoghue, from Tustin High School, will be in
attendance at the Council meeting to answer any questions. Attached, please find letters from the
respective schools summarizing their requests.
Respectfully submitted,

Dear Mayor and City Council Members:
The Foothill High School Grad-Night Committee of parent volUnteers, needs help to provide a
fun-filled safe and sober night of celebration for over 400 graduating seniors. Alternative grad-
night programs like ours have significamly reduced accidents and deaths of high school seniors
here in Orange County and nationwide in the past.
Again this year, we are asking the Tustin City Council to make a donation to our Foothill High
School Safe and Sober Mystery Grad-Night. Your charitable contribution to support our efforts
through fund raising will be greatly appreciated.
If necessary, we'd be delighted to appear at your next City Council meeting to answer any ques-
tions you may have.
