Strategic Directions 1. Advance policies and practices which promote resilient families, quality early learning , comprehensive health and development across sectors. 2. Change the funding landscape to prioritize early childhood. The Facts to Support Investment in Early Childhood •90% of brain development occurs in the first 5 years of life •700 neural connections per second develop in the first three years of life •Children who are “Ready for School” •75% less likely to drop out of school •60% less likely to become teen parents •40% more likely to attend college •Early Development Index Data in Orange County indicates approximately 50% of children in OC are at not ready for kindergarten •Although change can occur after the early childhood years, it is more costly and takes more time and resources to make the change. Smart investments in early childhood produce social benefits, cost savings, and economic returns for children, families, and society. Social Determinants of Health & Equity Thriving communities are determined by the conditions in which we are born, grow and age, and in which we live and work. Equitable opportunities in these factors are essential to our health and wellbeing.
