CHILI COOK-OFF MAYOR'S PRESENTATION
SUBJECT:
SUMMARY:
The 2005 World's Championship Chili Cook-Off sanctioned by the International Chili
Society (ICS) will be held October 7-9 in Omaha, Nebraska. The winner of the Red
Chili competition from the 2005 Tustin Street Fair & Chili Cook-off, Marc Reardon from
local Boy Scout Troop #33, will represent the City of Tustin. Mr. Reardon will be
presenting the Mayor of Omaha an award from the Mayor of Tustin in recognition of the
City of Omaha hosting the 2005 World's Championship Cook-Off.
RECOMMENDATION:
A presentation of the "Mayor's Exchange Award" by Mayor Lou Bone to Mr. Reardon.
BACKGROUND:
The 21st annual Tustin Street Fair & Chili Cook-off was held in Old Town on Sunday,
June 5th from 11A-5P. A record crowd estimated at more than 20,000 was on hand to
enjoy a fun-filled day. The event featured a traditional chili cook-off, craft booths, food
booths hosted by local non-profit agencies, children's rides, community information,
entertainment and music. The non-profit recipients for event proceeds this year were
the Tustin American legion Post #227 and the Tustin Area Senior Center Fund, Inc.
Senior Ways & Means Committee. Each group received $3,500 an increase from last
year when $6,000 was disbursed.
With 40 chili teams the 2005 cook-off became a regional qualifier. There was a record
$19,296 worth of chili tasting tickets sold this year; an increase of 15% over last year.
The winner of the Red Chili competition, Marc Reardon from local Boy Scout Troop #33,
will represent the City of Tustin at the World Championship. Mr. Reardon was a first
time cook and as the 2005 Tustin Street Fair & Chili Cook-Off Red Chili Champion he
qualified for the championship. Mr. Reardon will be in attendance at the Council
M ing to receive he award and answer any questions.
