HomeMy WebLinkAboutCC RES 87-14 RESOLUTION NO. 87-14 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF TUSTIN DECLARING ITS SUPPORT FOR CREATION OF AN OCEANIC PARK/NATIONAL PRESERVE (THE AREA PERPENDICULAR TO THE NORTHERNMOST. AND SOUTHERNMOST POINTS OF SANTA CATALINA ISLAND TO THE COAST OF ORANGE COUNTY) .. WHEREAS, the Orange County coastline serves the recreation needs of the entire County of Orange and beyond with its multi-million dollar tourism- related-economies, commercial and sport fishing and boating, and numerous recreational activities; and WHEREAS, the City of Tustin, in conjunction with Orange County Our Shores (OCSOS), a non-profit, educational corporation committed to preservation of California's unique and spectacular coastline, advocates gain of legislative support through the endorsement of cities, counties other governmental a§encies; and WHEREAS, the protection of our state's natural and scenic resources are best served by the preservation of marine life, careful management of our country's national energy resources and the scenic quality of our unimpeded vi ew; and WHEREAS, there are long-term benefits to coastline's original character for future generations through conservation, renewable energy resources and national energy management; and preserve and protect the by pursuing alternatives effective, comprehens i ve WHEREAS, to ensure the quality of the coastal environment by pro= tecting against the possibility of oil exploration and drilling-related haz- ards by such toxic contaminates as' drilling muds, transfer discharges, oil spills and seepage, potential illegal dumping and air quality degradation from industrial on and offshore operations, is in our nation's best interest; and WHEREAS, onshore processing and transportation facilities would increase air pollution, building density and development of open space, municipal service requirements, traffic congestion, harbor docking facilities and demand of fresh water supplies, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Tustin advocates local leadership in the establishment of an Oceanic Park/ National Preserve and urges Orange County cities, the Board of Supervisors, the City of Avalon and other local agencies to support this important and necessary endeavor.
