Meeting: Regular Meeting of the City Council and Special Meeting of the City Council Item: PUBLIC HEARING ITEM 8 eComment: Dear City Council Members, We hope you and loved ones are safe and healthy. Veterans Legal Institute is grateful for the recommendation to continue our partnership through the CDBG program. We support another three year partnership to serve our Tustin Veterans together through these challenging times. At present, VLI has served 22 unduplicated Tustin Veterans out of the projected 25 for this program year. VLI's rapid response to the novel coronavirus began the week of 3/6. In anticipation of the stay at home order, VLI collaborated with its six outreach clinic partners to shift over 50 in person appointments to telephonic. On 3/17, the VLI office went virtual overnight with its team of 12 staff and over 200 volunteers. VLI will maintain virtual hours for as long as necessary. VLI's current priorities are the health and safety of its clients, team, volunteers, colleagues, and community; continuing to provide free legal services; and proactively communicating with all clients and community to lessen the confusion of closed courts, government agencies, and the uncertainty that comes with job loss and ability to remain safely housed. Since going virtual, VLI staff attorney have been leveraging their pro bono base and volunteers, speaking with opposing counsel and preparing documents to help find ways forward in pandemic parenting plans, rent issues, veterans benefits, income stabilization and more. Pro bono legal clinics have continued in virtual format telephonically. Currently, we have 23 open cases for Tustin Veterans. Recently, the OC Superior Court rescheduled approximately 9,500 civil cases and have approximately 25,000 new civil cases that are on hold. There is concern juries will not be able to congregate. The courts are advocating for mediation and voluntary settlements whenever possible, especially critical in domestic violence and the rapidly changing conditions for renters. Thank you for caring so deeply for the wellbeing of Tustin's Veterans. View and Analyze eComments This email was sent from https://aranicusideas.com Unsubscribe from future mailings
