CLOSURE AND REROUTING OF TRAFFIC ONTO AND OVER
JAMBOREE ROAD AND PORTOlA PARKWAY FOR THE ORANGE
COUNTY MARATHON
SUBJECT:
SUMMARY
The State of California has approved the conducting of the Orange County Marathon on
January 8, 2006, requiring the closure of SR 261 between Walnut Avenue and Portola
Parkway. The City Council is requested to authorize the temporary closure and adopt
Resolution 0.5115.
RECOMMENDATION
That the City Council authorize the temporary closure and re-routing of traffic onto and
over Jamboree Road and Portola Parkway on January 8, 2006 between 6:00 a.m. and
12:00 p.m.
FISCAL IMPACT
Our Police Department will be deploying between two and three police units to maintain
traffic control near Walnut Avenue and Portola Parkway, adjacent to the ramps of SR
261. The Orange County Marathon will be paying the cost of our police units' labor.
BACKGROUND
The Orange County Marathon footrace is scheduled for Sunday morning, January 8,
2006. The "Run for Orange County Kids" and the Orange County Marathon promoters
require the temporary closure of SR 261 on January 8 between Walnut and Portola
Parkway, between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon.
The resolution is required by Caltrans to ensure that all appropriate governmental
agencies are aware of the closure of SR 261.
Our Police Department, in conjunction with our Public Works Department, has been
working with the Orange County Marathon organizers to provide logistical support for

the road closures. The ramp to southbound SR 261 at Portola Parkway and northbound
SR 261 at Jamboree Road will be closed for the six hour period.
The adoption of Resolution 05-115 notifies the State of California that our agency is
aware of the road closures on SR 261.
