HomeMy WebLinkAboutCC RES 86-123RESOLUTION NO. 86-123 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF TUSTIN, CALIFORNIA, SUPPORTING THE JOINT EFFORTS OF THE TUSTIN UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT AND THE TUSTIN POLICE DEPARTMENT TO MAKE DRUG AND ALCOHOL ABUSE PREVENTION A HIGHEST PRIORITY FOR THE 1986-87 SCHOOL YEAR AND BEYOND WHEREAS, research studies show that the use of drugs and alcohol by school-aged children is epidemic in our schools and communities; and WHEREAS, the effects of drug and alcohol abuse are devastating to 7 young people's lives and their futures, to their families, to society, and to the educational environment; and 8 WHEREAS, schools are an appropriate place to educate youth about the 9 harmful effects of drug and alcohol abuse and to assist them in learning positive ways to make healthy choices in their lives; and 10 WHEREAS, the schools cannot be expected to shoulder this burden ]] alone because the future of the entire community, indeed of our democracy, depends upon having an educated citizenry able to make ethical and moral 1~ choices; and WHEREAS, the Tustin Police Department and the Tustin Unified School District currently provide 'eight drug and alcohol related programs, providing for Grades K through 12, for the education of youth ~o the dangers of drug abuse; and WHEREAS, schools should provide a s'afe haven for students so that our youth can be safe and learn effectively; now o THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that, at the request of our Police Chief, the Tustin City Council applauds the determination of school districts to make drug and alcohol abuse prevention a highest priority for the 1986-87 school year and beyond, and hereby instructs the Police Department to continue to work with our community's schools in a joint plan of action that will make school campuses safe havens from drugs.
