New eComment for Regular Meeting of the City
Council
Matthew Martinez submitted a new eComment.
Meeting: Regular Meeting of the City Council
Item: PUBLIC INPUT— Members of the public may submit comments in writing to address the
City Council on items on the Closed Session Agenda.
eComment: To the Members of the City Council, Thank you for the opportunity to comment. My
name is Matthew; I am a college student; I am a supporter of Voters Choose; and I have lived in
Tustin for 18 years. I ask that you adopt Rank and Add instead of district-based elections, and
that you put Rank and Add on the City's agenda for more public discussion. We cannot keep at-
large elections without a change. Checking off a couple boxes is really old-fashioned. We are
living in the 21st century, and we should have the capacity to say how much we like the
candidates we support on a ballot. This is an era of change, and we must change this outdated
system. But I am against districts, too, especially on their own. The Latino and Asian-American
community want equal representation, not segregated representation. Districts relegate us
permanently to one seat in a boxed area. District-based elections are another sure way to
divisive politics. The politicians are much less likely to care about the entire city's problems, and
that's bad for me, that's bad for Latinos, that's bad for Asians, that's bad for everybody! Rank
and Add will solve these problems. Rank and Add is a simple voting system that makes every
single vote more powerful. Voters get to say not only that they like specific candidates but also
how much they like each one. Rank and Add will make candidates reach out to me and voters
they usually ignore, especially under-represented groups. For voters, even if their top picks don't
win, they have a stake in deciding who wins an election. Please host an agenda item on Rank
and Add. That way, we can discuss it as a City, and more people can decide if it's a good idea.
Thank you, Matthew Martinez
