There are numerous reasons for making this a permanent measure that includes: Clearly from the perspective of minimizing the spread of Covid or other viruses, data has shown that outdoor dining was safer than being enclosed with many other customers. Allowing outdoor dining was and continues to be a "life preserver" for many independent and family owned restaurants who are part of the fabric of our community. These independent restaurant businesses provide employment for many and offer the customers a personal level and sense of family service often not experienced by the large corporate entities . We are lucky to live in a place where weather is conducive to being outdoors. The ability to dine outdoors or as is often referred to as "alfresco" adds to the overall experience of the diners. This results in a local alternative to traveling outside of Tustin for dining. Why travel to Laguna Beach or Newport Beach when one can capture the "alfresco" experience in our own backyard. This promotes local business and as a result benefits the city through tax revenues . 1 realize that in some cases the outdoor dining has encroached on space that would otherwise be used for parking or as a walkway. However as someone who has dined outdoors throughout the pandemic, I can state unequivocally that I have not seen or experienced any difficulty in parking at any of the restaurants I have frequented nor has there ever been an issue of right of way on the walks.. Most restaurants and specifically those in strip centers seem to have an abundance of parking both in the large lots or behind their buildings or on the street near the restaurants. It is my opinion ( which I know is shared by many of my neighbors) that the availability of outdoor dining has been one the best outcomes from this horrible pandemic. This has added greatly to the appeal of staying in Tustin for dining out. Sometimes change is brought about by unexpected circumstances. We should embrace those that really work. thank you Gary Spiegel i Maldonado, Jorge From: JoAnn spiegel Sent: Friday,July 1, 2022 5:161 PM To: TustinPlanning Subject: BAROL© CAFE.....CHRISTAKIS GREEK ...both on Newport Avenue, Tustin Follow Up Flag: Fallow up Flag Status: Completed Thank you for giving me opportunity to express to you and Tustin Planning how important I feel the outdoor tent venues have become to me and all my friends in Tustin. Besides being able to dine outdoors which is so refreshing, I also feel these great owners of Tustin restaurants might be able to create a whole new neighborhood feeling which will only help make Tustin that much better to outside customers. Whenever my family visits from New York we immediately take them to Barolo and Christakis. Given the past 2 years where most businesses have suffered due to Covid, I think it would absolutely do no harm in allowing those restaurants that wish to offer outside seating, to continue to thrive. In both cases very little, if any, public area is being used. Thank you again for your consideration and Happy 4th! CODE AMENDMENT 2022-0003 (ORDINANCE NO. 1526)- (OUTDOOR DINING AND SEATING) eComment: My wife and I have been Tustin residents since 1975 and fully support "outdoor dining" in Tustin. We both have underlying conditions and since the pandemic, we try to go to restaurants that offer"outdoor dining". We have gone to and supported Barolo Cafe since it opened in the early 90's, and has been our "go to"dining choice since COVID because they offer "outdoor dining". If parking is ever an issue out front we go to the rear of the building where there is always ample parking and then enter through the rear door. We strongly urge the planning commission to make the current temporary outdoor dining amendment permanent.
