Good morning Commissioners,
In response to Commissioner Chu's question (see her email below), the way that the Census looks at
race and ethnicity is two mutually exclusive demographic categories. White is a race and Hispanic is
an ethnicity, someone can be one, both, or neither.
• The white alone category includes persons that consider themselves racially White (including
those that identify as ethnically Hispanic).
• White alone, not Hispanic or Latino includes persons that identify as White racially (excluding
those that identify as ethnically Hispanic).
In the table below, the White, Hispanic population would be 696 persons (3,294-2,598). This is just
extra information that was available for this particular statistic in the Census. Other statistics just
didn't include this category which is why it isn't in all of the tables. The tables are technically
accurate and the variations are based solely on the data source of the statistic used. Hope this
clarifies things.

Subject: PC Question 9/13/2022
Good Afternoon, Justina and Irma,
Congratulations to the Community Development Department for getting a verbal
approval from Housing!
Upon reviewing the Draft Housing Element, I noticed that on Table II-14, Disability
Demographics, under Race Ethnicity, there are "White alone", "White alone, not
Hispanic or Latino", and "Hispanic or Latino (of any race)" categories. What's the
difference between "White alone" and "White alone, not Hispanic or Latino" groups?
There're other tables (Table II-13, 2, 4, 5, 8, 10, 11, 12, 19, & 20) that only use
"White/White Alone" and "Hispanic/Latino" categories. Should we make them more
consistent throughout?
Thank you for looking into this!
Lisa
