WEST, CITY MANAGER FROM: CHAD W. CLANTON, DIRECTOR OF PARKS AND RECREATION SERVICES SUBJECT: NAME APPROVAL FOR THE DOG PARK AT TUSTIN LEGACY PARK SUMMARY: At their September 21, 2022, Regular Meeting, the Community Services Commission recommended forwarding a name for the new dog park at Tustin Legacy Park for approval by the City Council. RECOMMENDATION: It is recommended that the City Council adopt Resolution 22-49 approving "The Bark Barracks at Tustin Legacy Park" as the official name of the City of Tustin's first dog park. FISCAL IMPACT: There is no fiscal impact for this item. CORRELATION TO THE STRATEGIC PLAN: The dog park project advances Goal A of the City of Tustin Strategic Plan regarding Economic and Neighborhood Development by expanding recreational activities through improvements to existing parks. BACKGROUND: In the 2022-2023 Capital Improvement Program Budget, City Council approved the design and construction of Tustin's first dog park to be located at Tustin Legacy Park. At just under one acre, the dog park will feature separately fenced large and small dog areas with two -gate entry systems, lighting, play amenities, shade and seating areas, an informational kiosk, a dog memorial area, and plenty of open space to run. Currently, the project is midway through the design phase, with expected completion in Summer 2023. In July 2022, the Community Services Commission approved the strategy recommended by staff for the selection of a name for the dog park at Tustin Legacy Park, including the appointment of a Dog Park Naming Sub -Committee. Name suggestions for the dog park were solicited from the public through a variety of community outreach methods. The opportunity was promoted at the 2022 Concerts in the Park and Movies in the Park DocuSign Envelope ID: 5FBAD57E-537E-47F8-B9B6-AA097706BFD8 events through announcements and flyers and it was publicized multiple times via social media platforms, email blasts, and the City website. Collected in-person at the events and via an online survey through the end of August 2022, a total of 153 name suggestions were received. Staff worked with the Dog Park Naming Sub -Committee to narrow these down to a final list of five (5) names which were presented to the full Community Services Commission at their September 21, 2022, meeting. After discussion and consideration of the five options, the Commission chose to recommend "The Bark Barracks at Tustin Legacy Park" based on its uniqueness and connection to the military history of the Legacy area. Their second choice was "The Dog Spot at Tustin Legacy Park". Respectfully submitted, DocuSign/IelId11 by: M r,LU46V, EE0391941C_. Chad W.
