HomeMy WebLinkAbout09 REVISION CLASS & COMP PLAN 09-05-06AGENDA REPORT
MEETING DATE: SEPTEMBER 5, 2006
TO: WILLIAM A. HUSTON, CITY MANAGER
FROM: HUMAN RESOURCES DEPARTMENT
SUBJECT: REVISION TO THE CITY'S CLASSIFICATION & COMPENSATION PLAN
SUMMARY:
This agenda item recommends amending the City's Classification and Compensation Plan by adding one full-
time position in the City Manager's Office for the classification of Communications Manager.
RECOMMENDATION:
That the City Council approve the addition of one full-time position in the classification of Communications
Manager and add this position to the Classification and Compensation plan.
FISCAL IMPACT:
Approximately $60,000 this fiscal year.
BACKGROUND AND DISCUSSION:
Pursuant to the City's Personnel Rules and Regulations, the City is required to maintain a Classification and
Compensation Plan covering all classes of positions in the City Service. The Classification and Compensation
Plan is approved annually in conjunction with the adoption of the budget. As various needs arise staff makes
recommendations for changes to this plan.
Consistent with past practice, staff requests approval from the City Council to amend our Classification and
Compensation Plan as follows:
Classification
Communications Manager
Allocation
+1
Range
796
Monthlv Salary
$6,405 - $7,821
This is a newly created exempt classification that will be in the unrepresented management group. Currently,
the City contracts for services that this new position will become responsible for providing. Funding for this
position will come from funds budgeted for the existing contract of these services.
The need for services in the areas of communications, public information, public relations, marketing and
related programs continues to increase. Employing a full-time person is the most cost effective way to meet
this increased need and to add and/or enhance programs and services we'd like to bring to our community.
