DISCUSSION:
Background
In 2023, City staff initiated the concept of the Old Town Tustin Historic Virtual Walking tour to
generate new excitement surrounding Tustin's historic resources. The City Council affirmed
the concept by including it as one of their Strategic Work Plan directives, and staff proceeded
with developing the tour. Fourteen (14) historic sites have been selected for the self -guided
tour.
Sites that are featured in the tour include:
1. Knights of Pythias Building
3. Tustin Hardware Store
5. Synergy Office Building
7. Tustin Unified School District
Administration Building
9. Artz Building
11. Jamestown Village Little Tree Church
13. Cox Market Plaza
2. Columbus Tustin Bust
4. Kelly Building
6. Tustin Blacksmith Shop
8. Stevens House
10. The Jabberwocky/Vintage Lady
12. Tustin Garage
14. McCoy Building
Information that is included with each historic site includes the
property name and address, with a Google Maps street view, and
directions to locate the property. A brief description of the property
is provided on the main page, with a link that can be followed to
access additional historic photos and context for each site.
Community Outreach
During creation of the Virtual Walking Tour, City staff worked closely
in collaboration with the Tustin Area Historical Society and the Tustin
Preservation Conservancy on the content of the tour. Both
organizations were imperative in verifying the accuracy of the tour
information, and in providing additional historic photos and content
to the walking tour.
City staff connected with various business owners or property
owners whose historic property is featured in the tour, and received
positive feedback from everyone who was contacted. The City
intends to provide marketing materials to businesses throughout Old
Town with a QR code for the tour such as printed cards, vinyl window
clings, stickers on sidewalks, etc. so that business patrons and
passers-by can easily scan and access the tour if they would like to
participate at any point.

On January 23, 2024, the Old Town Historic Virtual Walking Tour was presented to the Tustin
Planning Commission as the first introduction of the tour to the community. Brian Sjoberg with
the Tustin Preservation Conservancy attended the meeting in support of the launch of the
walking tour.
Our historic preservation partners at the Historic Society and the Conservancy, the Tustin
Chamber of Commerce, and other community groups will be invited to share a link to the tour
on their websites and on their social media outlets. City staff additionally intends to promote
the Historic Virtual Walking Tour at City or community events held in the Old Town area. Keep
an eye out for social media posts featuring the tour, QR codes throughout Old Town, and share
the experience with your Tustin friends and neighbors.
Next Steps
As part of annual and ongoing historic preservation efforts, the City plans to initiate routine
updates to the Virtual Walking Tour in continued collaboration with our historic preservation
partners. Staff anticipates adding additional stops to the walking tour in the future, along with
bolstering the existing entries with new photos and content as available. Tour maintenance and
updates may also appear on the Historic and Cultural Resources Advisor Work Program in the
future, and as an accomplishment in the Certified Local Government Annual Report.
