Home My WebLink About03 PC REPORT TUSTIN HISTORIC PRESERVATION WEEK AGENDA REPORT ITEM #3 MEETING DATE: APRIL 23, 2024 TO: PLANNING COMMISSION FROM: COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT SUBJECT: TUSTIN HISTORIC PRESERVATION WEEK: MAY 7 — 14, 2024 SUMMARY: The Community Development Department is excited to announce the schedule of our upcoming Historic Preservation Week celebration.This celebration will take place from May 7 to May 14, 2024, and will include a series of in-person events and fascinating fun facts about the City of Tustin's history. We invite you to join us in the festivities as we honor the storied history of our City during this captivating week. RECOMMENDATION: It is recommended that the Planning Commission receive and file this report. DISCUSSION: Background On March 26, 2024, the Planning Commission adopted the 2024 Historic and Cultural Resources Advisor (HCRA) Work Program by incorporating activities aimed at bolstering enthusiasm, knowledge, and community engagement regarding historic preservation in Tustin. As part of the 2024 Work Program, staff recommends the inauguration of "Historic Preservation Week," in Tustin, during which the City will orchestrate a series of events, share historical insights, and provide valuable historical resources. The finale of this commemorative week will be marked by the City's annual Historic Walking Tour in Old Town Tustin. Historic Preservation Week is anticipated to be continued annually during one week in May, aligning with similar celebrations in neighboring cities and the State Office of Historic Preservation (OHP). Shop, Dine and Visit All Weekend Long and May 12 Monday, May 13 Treasures of Tustin's Tustin Icons Cemetery Tour Past Tuesday, May 14 A Walk Through Preservation Week Finale History Additional details of the daily events and glimpse of the fun facts that will be shared are included as Attachment A and B to this staff report, and full event and fun fact details, including resource links, will be made available on the City's official website beginning on May 7: www.tustinca.org/HistoricPreservationWeek. Community Outreach and Marketing City staff has collaborated with the Tustin Area Historical Society, and the Tustin Preservation Conservancy, by verifying historical photographs and content, and on planning and hosting activities for the week. This demonstrates the successful partnership among the City and local historic preservation groups on preserving our cultural heritage and fostering a sense of pride and ownership in the community's shared history. The City of Tustin would like to extend our thanks and gratitude to our historic preservation partners for their collaboration on this exciting new event. Planning Commission Tustin Historic Preservation Week Page 3 To share our excitement during Historic Preservation Week with the Tustin community and beyond, the City's Facebook page will highlight the week's promotional flyers for the daily events and fun facts. The attached promotional flyers, featuring the Historic Preservation Week events and fun facts, have additionally been shared with the Tustin Chamber of Commerce, Tustin Unified School District, the Old Town business community, and with our other community partners such as the Tustin Community Foundation. Staff encourages the Commission and community to share the promotional materials for the event, and visit our dedicated webpage (www.tustinca.org/HistoricPreservationWeek) on May 7 to dive into Tustin's history, learn something new, and enjoy all that Historic Preservation Week has to offer. Next Steps In a commitment to the continued efforts of historic preservation, City staff intends to observe "Historic Preservation Week" one week in May every year. This initiative will progress in our partnership with the Historic Area Historical Society and Tustin Preservation Conservancy and with the Tustin Community. Looking ahead, the City's staff is excited to enrich this annual event by introducing an expanded array of activities, educational workshops, and engaging content.
