Kendio; Yasuda, Erica; Woodward, Carrie Subject: FW: Enderle Center Housing Overlay Date: Monday, November 18, 2024 9:00:33 AM From: Mary Kuli Sent: Saturday, November 16, 2024 3:50 PM To: City Council <citycouncil@tustinca.org> Subject: Enderle Center Housing Overlay Dear Tustin City Council Members, I am writing to express my concerns regarding Public Hearing Item 16, which involves the Housing Element Rezone Implementing Programs and, more specifically, the proposed housing overlay for Enderle Center. While I understand the need to meet state -mandated housing requirements, I strongly believe that this location is not the right choice for such an initiative. One of the things I love most about Tustin is the strong sense of community that has been fostered over the years. Enderle Center plays a vital role in this, providing a unique space where people of all ages can gather for events, entertainment, and community -building activities. The Holiday Open House is one of the most well -attended events, drawing hundreds of people who enjoy entertainment, shopping, and dining in a festive environment. In addition, the Spring Fling, Summer Concerts, and Hawaiian Customer Appreciation Night, each consistently attract large crowds and contribute to the vibrant atmosphere and serve as a reminder of the unique character that the Enderle Center brings to the city. Incorporating new homes into this space would not only disrupt these cherished events, but it could also alter the atmosphere of this vibrant, community -centered area. These events foster a sense of togetherness, and the Enderle Center is a key space for that. The addition of residential housing would change its character and its ability to host such activities, potentially diminishing the sense of community that has made Tustin such a special place. I am not opposed to the city's efforts to fulfill state housing requirements, but I believe there are alternative locations within Tustin that would be more suitable for the proposed 413 new homes. These properties, Tustin Legacy and Tustin Marketplace, could absorb all or most of these homes without compromising the community -oriented space that Enderle Center provides. The potential loss of this gathering place would be a significant blow to the social fabric of our city. By choosing a location that better preserves the character of Tustin, we can meet state housing goals while still maintaining the quality of life that makes the city unique. For these reasons, I respectfully urge the Tustin City Council to rereconsider approving the housing overlay at Enderle Center. I believe that by choosing a different location, we can both fulfill the housing mandate and preserve the strong sense of community that makes Tustin such a great place. We can and should find a solution that balances the need for new housing with the preservation of our community spaces. Thank you for your time and consideration. I trust that the Council will carefully evaluate this proposal in the best interest of all Tustin residents. Sincerely, Mary Kuli La Galleria Boutique, Inc.
