CLANTON, DIRECTOR OF PARKS AND RECREATION APPOINTMENT TO FILL VACANCY ON TUSTIN AREA SENIOR CENTER FUND BOARD OF DIRECTORS Staff is requesting City Council appoint Michele Markus to the Tustin Area Senior Center Fund, Inc. Board of Directors. RECOMMENDATION: It is recommended that the City Council appoint Michele Markus, an active community volunteer, to the Board of Directors of the Tustin Area Senior Center Fund, Inc. FISCAL IMPACT: There is no fiscal impact associated with this item. CORRELATION TO THE STRATEGIC PLAN: This action supports Goal D of the City's Strategic Plan: Strong Community and Regional Relationships. By maintaining a full and active board, the City ensures continued support for the Senior Center through philanthropic efforts and civic participation, fostering stronger ties between local government, community stakeholders, and the older adult population it serves. BACKGROUND AND DISCUSSION: The Tustin Area Senior Center Fund, Inc. was established in 1985 to raise money for the construction of the Tustin Area Senior Center. When the Center opened in 1989, the Articles of Incorporation were amended to broaden the Board's scope to include acceptance of gifts and donations to aid in capital acquisitions and the operation of the Center. Over the ensuing years, several facility improvement projects have been financed by the Fund. Recent projects include the purchase of new flooring in the Game Room in 2021, a new bingo machine in 2022, new chairs and tables in 2023, and new flooring in the lobby and common spaces in 2025. Docusign Envelope ID: CA99B341-9507-4190-B603-343EE6FCBE23 City Council Agenda Report Senior Center Fund Appointment October 10, 2025 Page 2 According to the bylaws, the Board of Directors consists of one member from the City Council, one member from the Senior Advisory Board, the City Manager, and two Members -at -Large. The most recent annual meeting of the Tustin Area Senior Center Fund, Inc. Board of Directors was held May 13, 2025 with the current members including Mayor Pro Tem, John Nielsen; City Manager, Aldo E. Schindler; and Senior Advisory Board Members Sherry Geyer and Ken Higman. At this meeting, the resignation of Marisa Charette, former Board Member At Large, was recognized and the Board approved staff's recommendation of Michele Markus to fill this vacancy. Mrs. Markus has demonstrated a strong commitment to community service through her volunteer involvement at Senior Center events such as Casino Night and Pasta Fest, and currently serves as the Volunteer Chair for the Tustin Tiller Days Committee. In addition, she regularly volunteers at the Sunset Market event and the Tustin Street Fair and Chili Cook -Off. Michele is also the daughter of longtime former board member Don Roppel and is eager to carry on his legacy of service by contributing her time and talents to the continued success of the Senior Center Fund.
