TUSTIN CITY CODE PROHIBITING THE SALE OF KRATOM PRODUCTS The City Attorney's
office has prepared proposed amendments to Article 6 of the Tustin City Code to add a ban on
the sale, distribution, and advertisement for sale of kratom products within the City. The
proposed ordinance would ban the sale, distribution, and advertisement for sale of any product
containing any part of the leaf of the plant Mitragyna speciosa (more commonly known as the
kratom plant). The purpose of the ordinance is to protect the public health and welfare against
the sale and distribution of products which the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has identified
as having opioid-like characteristics, and which pose a threat to the health and safety of the
American Public.
eComment: My name is Drea, and I am writing to respectfully urge you not to support a ban on
kratom. Kratom has had a positive and meaningful impact on my life (and the lives of many
others). For me, it has been a natural alternative that supports my well-being, ability to manage
chronic pain. It also provides energy and mental clarity- this is important as my chronic
conditions cause chronic fatigue. I've had great success without the harmful side effects
associated with many prescription medications. Millions of Americans use kratom responsibly
and safely as part of their daily wellness routine. It's a plant, not a synthetic drug, and when used
properly, it can offer benefits such as mild pain relief, mood support, and increased motivation.
Most importantly, kratom has helped many people avoid or reduce dependence on more
dangerous substances, including opioids and alcohol. Rather than banning kratom outright,
believe sensible regulation and quality control are the best path forward — ensuring safety and
product consistency while protecting the rights of adults to make informed choices about their
own health. Another concern of mine is the fact that alcohol has remained easily accessible
while being responsible for tens of millions of deaths globally. These deaths have been
attributable to alcohol since 2010 (very likely more than 30 million) based on the annual scales
involved. Kids are able to get access to alcohol. Alcohol withdrawal is deadly whereas
discontinuing Kratom use is not. I respectfully ask that you consider the many stories like mine
and the growing body of research supporting kratom's safety when used responsibly. Please do
not ban kratom — instead, work toward a balanced, science -based approach that keeps it
available to those who rely on it. Thank you for your time and for listening to the voices of
responsible kratom consumers. Sincerely, Drea
