HomeMy WebLinkAbouteComment - Angelino Javier Garcia (Item No. 5)Hello Mayor and Council, my name is Angelino Javier Garcia and I live here in Tustin. Many
people in my neighborhood hesitate to speak up, so I am writing to you myself. To be honest,
we are fed up. You are very busy with that deal to hand over city land to a megachurch, while
there are parts of Tustin that seem not to exist to you at all—like where I live, near Pasadena
and McFadden. Here, cars get stolen, packages are stolen from doorsteps, walls get
vandalized, and at night, there are people loitering who look suspicious. We don't even let
the kids go out and play alone anymore, and the elderly don't want to go for walks after dark.
That’s not right, is it? What makes me angriest is how long the police take to respond. You
call and call, and nothing happens. If someone is in danger, every minute counts. Neighbors
are starting to say, "Why bother calling if they don't show up?"—and that is extremely
dangerous. It’s not the fault of the officers on the street; it’s a matter of priorities. That’s why
it infuriates me to see how the sale of over three acres of city land at Tustin Legacy to
Mariners Church was handled—apparently without an open bidding process and without
consulting the public. That land belongs to everyone, not just a select few. If you’re going to
sell it, the money and attention should go toward what the people truly need—like making
the streets safe. So, here is what I’m asking for: • More patrols in the neighborhoods with the
most trouble, especially at night and on weekends. • Disclosure of police response times for
each neighborhood—to see if some get faster service than others—and a plan to ensure
faster response times. • Better street lighting, cameras where feasible, and more activities
for young people. • Meetings with the police in our neighborhoods—including sessions in
Spanish—so people can report issues without fear. • Transparency regarding the sale of any
city-owned land, with a portion of the proceeds going toward public safety and the
neighborhoods that need it most; and regarding the Mariners Church deal: disclose the sale
price, the true market value, and who pushed the deal through. If everything is above board,
there is nothing to hide. Also, just so you know, *Voice of OC* is already aware of this; people
are paying attention. Tustin is our city, too. Every neighborhood deserves to feel safe and to
be heard—not just the new or wealthy ones. Thank you.
