TO: PLANNING COMMISSION
FROM: COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT
SUBJECT: TUSTIN HISTORIC REGISTER NOMINATION - 405 W. MAIN ST.
RECOMMENDATION
That the Planning Commission approve the nomination of 405 West Main Street to the
Tustin Historic Register Plaque Designation Program.
BACKGROUND AND DISCUSSION
Owners of historic homes or commercial buildings in Tustin are eligible to participate in the
City's plaque designation program, called the Tustin Historic Register. The purpose of the
voluntary program is to recognize Tustin's historic properties, educate the public, increase
public interest in historic properties, and promote community pride. The bronze plaques
purchased through the program may be mounted or set on metal stakes. Property owners
who would like to participate are responsible for the cost, installation, and maintenance of
the plaques.
The plaques display the construction date of the building, up to two lines of text, and are
identified with the words "Tustin Historic Register." Nomination forms are obtained from
the Community Development Department. Anyone, including the Commission, may
nominate properties.
Tustin residents Leslie and Mike Sinocruz have submitted the attached nomination for the
property at 405 West Main Street. The Craftsman Bungalow was built in 1919 and has a B
rating in the City's 1990 Historical Survey. A local rancher, Samuel W. Suddaby, is
believed to have built the residence. It is recommended that "Suddaby House" be selected
as the most appropriate historical name for the property. The date on the plaque should
be "1919."

Specify your reasons for the nw~aination (ag. age of structure, architectural det uls, place in
Tustin'a history, former residents} were significant in Tustin history, etc.):,
A local rancher, Samuel W. Suddaby is believed to have built this house in 1919.
His grandson, Cecil, who worked at Smart & Final Grocers and owned a large
orange grove on the west side of Newport Avenue at First Street, inherited the
house but did not live in it. The Craftsman styling of this house makes it a good
contributor to the Tustin Cultural Resources District and to the Craftsman theme
of this block of Main Street. In addition, the house is significant for its associations
with the Suddaby family.
