HomeMy WebLinkAboutMAIN ST W 225 12/04/1994To: Planning Dept. Subject: Proposed new wheelchair ramp `Dustin Presbyterian Church 225 W. Main St., Tustin, CA for the: 12-4-94 The attached drawing defines the proposed new wheelchair ramp and handrails. The handrails are identical to the existing handrail on the church front steps except the vertical bars are closer spaced. The drawing also shows proposed modifications to the courtyard where tree roots have lifted some of the concrete. We propose removing the offer,;ling trees and the lifted and damaged concrete. We propose replacing the two trees with ficus benjamina which have very invasive root systems. We will surround each root ball with a two foot deep plastic cylinder. Outside the cylinder will be a six or eight inch wide ditch full of crushed pock. This rock filled ditch will be fed from an existing watering system so that the trees will be deep watered. This will protect our new concrete from the tree's root systems. We propose replacing the existing wooden benches with slumpstone walls with capping stones. The slumpstone will be uncolored and the cap stones have a whiter tone than plain cement. (the present planters on the west side of the courtyard have slumpstone walls and caps that are a pale salmon color. This color is not presently available.). Finally we plan to paint the vertical walls of the new ramp the same white as the walls of the church. The legs of the handrail that overlap this wall will also be painted white. These walls will be behind the ferns, pittosporum and rhapiolepis that we will replace in that planter after the new ramp is completed. We believe this new ramp will be much safer, meet present code requirements and still blend in well with our 65 year old church building. Please see three attached photos showing two views of the courtyard/ramp area and a picture of the kind of ficus tree we plan to plant in the courtyard.
