A house rarely reflects the spirit of the -5-t v yr G owner perfectly, but this breath -of -spring color scheme captures the spirit of its cheery proprietor, Juanita Bass. People drive from miles around for her soul food and Yankee dinners served with hush puppies, black- eyed peas, and lots of love. Juanita spent thirty years buying and selling antiques and raising six children. She still has a little antiques shop behind the restaurant and says, "I feel I've come a long way since my great-grandfather was a slave in Virginia. He came north and settled in this area. So here I aml" Her father, Everett Holmes, the first black mayor in New York State, was elected by write-in votes. Juanita bought this 1874 Italianate built by Dr. H. Bailey a few years ago and went to work polishing and primping. She remembered it when there was a sign on the door that read: "White House. Berries for sale." It was the first house in the village with electricity and indoor plumbing. The original marble mantelpieces, light fixtures, and grain -painted woodwork have survived. The oldest tulip tree in Oneida County still blooms in the front yard. A visit to her daughter in San Francisco inspired the five colors: teal, gray green, mauve, pink, and white. The next Halloween, a young trick -or -treater came to the door and said, "Hey, lady, I love your house." "Then I knew I had done the right thing. More and more Victorian homeowners are daring to do what we have done with colors. We love it." 47 a 0 0 Plate 2 1 WINDOW SASH QUEEN ANNE STYLE. FIG. 1. F1 G. 2.
